Generation

Generating Capabilities

Madelia Municipal Light & Power (MMLP) owns and operates a total of five generators housed in part of the original 1939 power plant; four duel fueled Fairbanks Morse OP (opposing piston) and one Colt Pielstick. MMLP receives its power from Heartland Energy in Madison, South Dakota. Heartland Energy can utilize our power in the event of a shortage due to high demand. MMLP receives an annual payment for capacity needs.

Power Outage

Most power outages will be over almost as soon as they begin in our community. When there is an outage on the transmission grid that supplies Madelia and surrounding communities, MMLP supplies back up power for the whole community with its generation plant. When outages are in Madelia, MMLP crews can respond quickly because service is originated locally. Power outages are often caused by freezing rain, sleet storms and/or high winds which damage power lines and equipment. Cold snaps or heat waves can also overload the electric power system. In the event of an outage, rest assure MMLP crews are prepared to respond immediately to restore power in a timely manner with very minimal inconvenience to our customer base.
